She DOES Listen!
I often wonder if Jane hears me at all.
The evidence (her actions) points to the contrary much of the time. (e.g. “Don’t take toys away from Elizabeth” [snatch]; “Don’t push Elizabeth” [shove]; “Watch where you’re going” [looking off into space]; etc.)
Occasionally, I get confirmation that at least some of the things I say penetrate her ears and make their way into her brain.
It’s the weirdest stuff, however, that makes it in.
Take our conversation in the car today, for instance:
Jane: “Where’d my penny go?”
Me: “I don’t know, babe. Where’d you put it?”
Jane: (fishing in her pocket) “I can’t get it. Mom can get it.”
Me: “When we get home, I’ll get it for you.”
Jane: “And then I can put my penny in my breakable pig.”
At least she hears (insert heavy sarcasm here) the really important stuff.
