Straight from my Childhood…

Chef Boyardee Pizza Kit…and into my adult mouth.

It’s the Chef Boyardee Cheese Pizza Kit.

Complete with dough mix, canned sauce, and the not-quite-enough-to-cover-the-whole-pizza parmesan cheese packet.

I think I lived on them from about the 4th to the 8th grade.

And I made it for my lunch today.

Mmm. Chef Boyardee Cheese Pizza.

I am convinced I could eat 2 or 3 of them in one sitting if I had no moral food code. (which, of course, I do.)

Only one thing bothers me, though, about the ubiquitous Chef Boyardee Cheese Pizza Kit: the picture of the pizza on the box clearly has mozzarella cheese. (that, and Boyardee used to be hyphenated “Boy-Ar-Dee”; what’s up with that?!) Yet there is NO mozzarella cheese in the box.

Were it not for the TINY words, “Serving Suggestion Cheese Added”, it would TOTALLY be false advertising.

Truthfully, though, I think it’s better with just the parmesan cheese, anyway.

So take a trip back in time and make a Chef Boyardee Pizza for yourself.

You’ll be glad you did.

  1. Hmm, I’m very skeptical about this. I’ve never had one before! You’ve never steered me wrong, though…

  2. Before I try this one, I would try the Eagle brand condensed milk thing you posted. You know, the one about it making even dog turd taste good (You probably thought we’d forget that one).

And since I’m not trying that one, I’m not trying this one.

    Signed,
    to each his own :-)

  3. Uh, Anna? If you didn’t grow up eating these…well, let’s just say that they might not really appeal to an adult’s palate. (unless it’s a really familiar taste)
For me, part of the appeal is that familiarity and comfort of a food from my childhood…a fact that I cannot separate from the ACTUAL taste of Chef Boyardee products! Who knows, though? You and Evie might just love it!

  4. Mmmm, Chef Boy-Ar-Dee pizza! My cousin and I used to make them at her house every Friday night, along with iced tea and no-bake cookies. Then we’d watch Dukes of Hazard, Dallas and Falcon Crest.
Truthfully, I never thought they were that good, but it was the only pizza around for miles (not too many pizza places in Worthington back then). I always felt cheated by the “no mozzarella cheese” thing too.

  5. Ha I actually think they aren’t half bad…but then again, every now and then I like a can of Spaghetti O’s or ChefBoyarDeeRavioli. I know, I’m sicko :) I think like you said, its the familiarity and it brings back happy memories for me. :)
