Straight from my Childhood…

…and into my adult mouth.
It’s the Chef Boyardee Cheese Pizza Kit.
Complete with dough mix, canned sauce, and the not-quite-enough-to-cover-the-whole-pizza parmesan cheese packet.
I think I lived on them from about the 4th to the 8th grade.
And I made it for my lunch today.
Mmm. Chef Boyardee Cheese Pizza.
I am convinced I could eat 2 or 3 of […]

Left Lane Etiquette: A Mother’s Rebellion

Today as I drove back from a truly enjoyable day-trip to Chattanooga with my daughters, I found myself in a most unusual situation.
For approximately 45 miles or so, I drove exclusively in the left lane. By choice.
Yes, that’s right.
I drove in the left-hand lane only from about 10 miles north of Fort Payne to just […]

Cleaning with Crisco

Tonight I finished working on a nursery commission for MFL (Lindsey)…well actually, for a gift for Lindsey’s expectant cousin (didn’t want anyone to get the wrong idea because of my awful syntax.)
ANYWAY…I used spray adhesive for the wings of the dragonfly.
Spray adhesive and me. Not friends.
The wings stuck to the paper that I put underneath […]

Logic, Jane-style

At the breakfast table this morning:
“Jane, we need to put some lipstick [chapstick] on you before we go outside.”
“But I don’t want lipstick.”
“Well, you need it. Mommy needs some, too.”
“I need lipstick because my heart is hurting.” (holds hands in the shape of a heart.)
“Your heart is hurting?”
“Mmm-hmm. So I need some lipstick!”
Well then.

Mind the Rules

Rule #1: Do not leave children under 3 unattended for more than 1 minute.
Rule #2: Do not leave open beverages on low tables such as nightstands, coffee tables or end tables when you have children under 3 present.
I broke the rules just now.
Anyone want to guess where the contents of my half-drunk cup of coffee […]

Early Riser

Something has happened to me.

I”ve become an early riser.
Without fail, I’ve awakened at or before 6am every day since we moved to Birmingham.
And at least half of the time (maybe more), I’ve actually gotten up out of bed and done something!
Made coffee.
Answered an email or two.
Blogged.
Created art.
What on Earth. Who is this person I’ve become?!
I […]

Rx for Blue Moods

From the wise woman who gave me this gem, here’s a yummy and effective prescription for treating a blue mood:
Get yourself a stock of Junior Mints.
Don’t inhale them; put one in your mouth and suck on it and make it last.
The dark chocolate has magnesium which will lift your mood.
The mint is a relaxer for […]

Long Road Trips Made Better

Okay, I swore I would never be the kind of parent that bought TV’s and DVD players (and the like) to distract my children so that I wouldn’t have to “deal with them.”
I was never, EVER, going to be a mother who was relieved that her children were “good TV watchers.”
And you could take it […]

She DOES Listen!

I often wonder if Jane hears me at all.
The evidence (her actions) points to the contrary much of the time. (e.g. “Don’t take toys away from Elizabeth” [snatch]; “Don’t push Elizabeth” [shove]; “Watch where you’re going” [looking off into space]; etc.)
Occasionally, I get confirmation that at least some of the things I say penetrate her […]

Two-Man Circus

Here at Cirque du Martin, there are only two of us adult performers, so we have a lot of jobs.
Today, with a Christmas party looming and subsequent food and presents to be made, bought, wrapped and transported, and two little circus animals to entertain, feed, clothe and in general, care for completely, the circus is […]
