Week #1

Easy Chair, “Utrecht”
Designer: Gerrit Rietveld
Year: c. 1950
Description: Wood and original canvas with matching stitching
Estimated value: $6000-$8000
Why I chose this chair: I like the design. The clean, uncluttered lines are appealing to me, as is the color. The raw simplicity of it is fascinating to me. I am a big fan of this school of design (De Stijl). For a quick lesson in Gerrit T. Rietveld, or to view newly reproduced versions of his classic “Zig-zag” and “Red and blue” and “Utrecht” chairs visit cassina.com or click here. You’ll need to navigate from “collections” to “I Maestri” to “Gerrit Rietveld” to get to the history lesson and the chairs, but it’s worth the trip. At least it was to me.
