Lounge Chair, “Placentero”
Designer: Batti for Brion Arte Industrial
Year: unknown (2004?)
Description: fiberglass with leather upholstery
Estimated cost: $3630
Why I picked this chair: It’s incredibly strange, really original, and is terribly eye-catching. That’s pretty much it. It is supposed to be comfortable, but I couldn’t find a testimonial anywhere in all of my “research.”
There are some interesting things about this chair. First of all, it’s name, “Placentero”, came from the combination of “placenta” and “pleasure” which, according to Brion Experimental (click the red dot, then “gestation”, then “products”. I know, its a pain.), are both features of gestation. Whatever. Second, you can sit in it all different kinds of ways. You can even lay down in it. It really is supposed to mimic the in utero experience of a fetus. Here’s an excerpt from the company:
[it] is able to hold a person and give the possibility to connect with himself, giving the chance to make any movement and create whichever the position you like. Comfort is felt by this natural appeal that leads you to connect to yourself.
I have no idea what that even means.
Third, it retains its balance through user weight and a 33 lb counterweight at the bottom. It’s hard to tell in the above picture, but the outside of it is completely round. Bizarre. It also weighs 70 lbs. (which seems like a lot to me.) And the leather upholstery comes in several different colors. Bonus.
Weird, but cool-looking.
